The Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired is
unique in its ability to offer Residential Services to its Rehabilitation
and Computer Access Technology students. As the only blindness rehabilitation
center in eastern Pennsylvania with an on-site dormitory, CBVI can
readily accommodate students who live at a distance and are unable
to commute for training.
Located within the agency building, the dormitory
affords a sense of security for blind or visually impaired students
who are experiencing their first stay in an unfamiliar environment.
Able to house up to 14 students, dormitory accommodations include:
- Full-time supervision
- Central heating and air-conditioning
- Bed, closet and bureau for each resident
- Fully equipped, modern kitchen
- Updated laundry facilities
- Common living area with comfortable furniture and TV, computer,
CCTV, and Braille-writer access
Students plan, purchase, and prepare meals following
the guidelines of the dormitory budget. Weekly assignments related
to independence development are allocated on a rotating basis, allowing
students to practice newly acquired daily living skills in a nurturing
environment and to share common experiences with peers.
An atmosphere of cooperation and independence encourages
residents to participate in group planned social and recreational
activities which may include dining out, mall shopping, bowling,
movies, etc.
