Ask Dr. Jerry

I was recently diagnosed with early stage glaucoma. My doctor has prescribed eye drops but I am having difficulty administering them to myself. Do you have any suggestions?

Like many people, you may have a very strong reflex that makes you blink as soon as anything goes near your eye. Try this. After washing your face and eye area thoroughly, lay down flat, face up, on a firm surface. With your eye closed, place the drop outside of the lid in the corner of the eye near your nose. When you open your eye, the drop will roll in. Close your eye again and keep it closed for a few minutes. This method is effective for many people. Another suggestion is to purchase an Autodrop. This is a safe and simple eye drop guide. The eye drop bottle is inserted into a device which, when placed over the eye, holds the eye open and directs the drop. The Autodrop can be purchased inexpensively at the Sight Solutions store located at CBVI. Call Don Cassidy, the Sight Solutions store manager, at 610-874-1476, ext.145 for more information.

PA Act 44, the Transportation Bill
CBVI Employee Instrumental in Passag

On July 7.2002, Gov. Ed Rendell signed PA Act 44, the Transportation Bill. Present at the signing, which took place at the 69th Street SEPTA terminal in Upper Darby, was CBVI’s own Rod Powell. Rod, who is the Life Skills Coordinator at CBVI, is the former Chairman of the SEPTA Advisory Committee for Accessible Transportation (SAC). Rod has spent 10 years working with Thaddeus Robinson, chairman of SAC PPC, and State Representative Dwight Evans for dedicated funding for transit in

Pennsylvania. “There isno part of our society more dependent onpublic transportation than people with disabilities,” states Powell. According to Cynthia Lister, Regulatory Coordinator at SEPTA, “He (Rod) never lost heart! I can't count how many times he has testified, made visits to elected officials and agency personnel, spoken at hearings and commission meetings. He just kept working and, by golly, it happened.” Thanks, Rod, for your tireless efforts on behalf of disabled citizens and for a job well done.

Area Cyclists Support Bike 4 Sight

Area cyclists hit the roads on Sunday, June 3rd, to raise funds for the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI) at the Center’s 5th annual Bike 4 Sight event. Riders described the five scenic routes through Delaware, Chester and New Castle counties as “spectacular”, “magnificent”, and “the most beautiful ride ever.” Longest rides toured the grounds of Winterthur Museum and Country Estate. Sovereign Bank and Crozer Keystone Health System were title sponsors for Bike 4 Sight. Board member, Harry Havnoonian of Cycle Sport Media, chaired the fundraiser. CBVI extends a special thanks to everyone who helped to make the event a success. Bike 4 Sight 2008 is scheduled for Sunday, June 1st, so save the date. Check the Bike 4 Sight website, www.bike4sight.org, starting in.

February for details. See you at Bike 4 Sight!
