All programs and services offered by
the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired (CBVI) are driven
by the philosophy that people with blindness or vision loss can
be as well adjusted, independent, and productive as anyone else,
so long as there is quality training and support services for the
blind, and acceptance and understanding of blindness by the general
public. The training and educational programs found in our rehabilitation,
computer training, and low vision areas prepare our clientele for
the opportunities of family life, community access, employment,
and personal achievement. Unfortunately, too many people in the
general public operate under the misconception that people with
vision loss lack ability. By example and personal advocacy, program
graduates help to dispel these myths about the abilities of blind
people, through skills acquired during training. CBVI's public education
program complements this approach. Support services offered, such
as escort transportation or chore service, provides the extra resource
required by some individuals to maintain their quality of life.
As a result, our clientele are resuming family responsibilities,
successfully re-entering the workforce, going back to school, and
living quality productive lives.
