Low Vision Services

For one in every twenty Americans, glasses or contacts are not adequate for reading or viewing things at a distance. The field of low vision has been developed to help these people find alternative ways to use their remaining vision. For people whose vision cannot be restored with a prescribed correction, the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers Low Vision Services by an optometrist specially trained in low vision technologies. After an evaluation, the optometrist may recommend specialized vision aids which enable clients to use their remaining sight more comfortably and efficiently.

Vision aids may include, but are not limited to:

• Simple magnifying lenses
• Complex portable magnifiers, including mini-viewers and pocket viewers
• Telescopic lenses
• Microscopic button lenses
• Sun filters
• Hand-held closed circuit televisions (CCTV’s)
• Traditional fixed mounted CCTV’s

Low Vision Services include:

• A thorough examination to determine the power of magnification needed
• Selection of format for magnification based on client’s goals
• Hands-on training using the device
• A loaner device provided for a trial period
• Follow-up visits to confirm effectiveness and to provide additional training
• Referral for other services if appropriate

Clients may be referred by their eye care professionals or appointments can be made directly through the Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
