Computer Access Technology Training
With proper training, the blind or visually impaired computer user can be on equal footing with sighted colleagues both on the job, in the classroom, and at home. The Computer Access Technology (CAT) program at CBVI offers a comprehensive variety of computer training options customized to meet each person’s needs:
Computer Literacy
Offered in ten-week blocks, this course is for the new user, or a user new to access technology. The course emphasizes access technologies, including Jaws and Zoom Text, in the Windows OS environment.
Advanced Computer Training
This course targets specific skills geared towards the particular career, educational and /or personal computing goals of the student.
Short-term Options
CBVI offers individualized training modules to fit your schedule. This training may take place at our facility or off-site, if more convenient. CBVI contracts with students privately for instruction but also works in conjunction with the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS) and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), pending student eligibility.
Training areas include but are not limited to:
- All Windows operating system platforms, including Vista and Windows 7.
- JAWS, Zoom Text, and other screen reader and screen magnifier programs
- All Microsoft Office Suites from 2000 to present
- Web Browser Programs, including Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox
- E-mail, including Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, and Windows Mail
- Accessible Personal Data Assistants (PDAs)
- Digital Book Players
- Optical Character Recognition Technologies
- Accessible cell phone use, including iPhones
Short-term instruction is tailored to the needs of the student. Let us know your goals and we will do our best to structure lessons accordingly.
